Option for solo Scrappers HQ takeover (Gang showdown quest)
« on: January 08, 2018, 09:16:14 pm »
I tried to attack with eels squad but Silas got himself killed just a few times too many, so I reloaded and decided to weaken scrappers before main attack happens. Seems easy enough, waste a few gangers and fall back to the docks...But then I thought why not kill them all by my self since I play on classic and get all the xp, also because I usually try to end all combat encounters without allowing any foe firing a single shot or using meds (for extra challenge and loot). That was a bit long but after a few hours, I found the right combination and Depot B was devoid of life. Then I go to Silas and start the "attack"...now I did not really expect that there would be anything different because games usually tend not to cover every option but seeing the eels and sgs soldiers just stroll through absolutely dead compound and then act like they were part of the skirmish when I did all the work solo was sure disappointing and immersion breaking (because game did not recognise unexpected approach).

It is possible that I am mistaken and there is acknowledgement of that choice maybe if you attack the base before striking the deal with eels I did not try it out. Yet I strongly believe that there should be a special option and extra content when you proceed the questline. When Silas asks you to plant the bomb in the caverns there should option to convince him that if all he wants is to take the scrapper HQ he can just ask and you will "get it done". Naturally, even though Silas sees you as a capable individual he will still see your "plan" as absolutely derailed so you'll have to convince him. Both persuasion and intimidation should be possible. Needless to say, there should be an option to forfeit this suicide mission and agree to original plan (Silas will be annoyed) but if you actually manage to pull this off he should be very impressed and throw some extra cash (because you got him what he wanted without risking any of his men or actually damaging the depot with explosive diversion).

Makes sense that the game should recognize if you wiped the Scrappers on your own. We like our actions acknowledged and preferably rewarded. :D We're focused on finishing the expansion at the moment, so all of this will have to wait until after it's been released. And regarding the extra content and skill checks, can't promise anything yet but your suggestions has been noted. :)

Wow, did not expect an actual dev response! That is very refreshing and appreciated! And yes on second thought I agree, skill checks are not really needed there. Like if you play heavy combat oriented character with zero social skills that can totally take the base solo but can't because he simply can not persuade Silas that he actually a badass killer? That's frustrating.

As for the extra content I am sure it is not that quick to make but is it not in this case 10-17 new sentences and a few scripts?

As I see it - After you find Blaine and Silas tells you his plan you propose a solo mission which he shrugs off. If you adamant and say that you gave him no reason to doubt your abilities before, he will still be hesitant saying that taking on a whole compound is a different matter entirely (in all honesty the junkyard was more hard for me) but ultimately surrenders when you say that he has nothing to lose if you fail and die with your attempt. He proposes a compromise: for you to go and get him support for the original plan normally (as insurance if you fail) and then if you still persistent he agrees to your suicide plan still believing that you will die.

If you go back on your plan you will get 20-30% less reward "for wasting time", if you go solo you get 50% more (because Silas is really impressed, the gates and his people undamaged). There should be different phrases for eels and support soldiers who will go to the depot after you are done of course.

Plus one special response from Silas if the player decides to storm scrappers before progressing the questline normally. Silas should react with a mix of surprised annoyance, fear and joy and give 10-25% more reward.

Otherwise the only really complicated thing I could imagine that could be done and goes into the category of far too timely to implement is a whole new situation in which you convince Silas for solo run without actually requesting help from either SGS or Protectorate. While similar gameplay wise this will produce a new situation in area power balance where there is independent and more powerful Junkyard that resists advances of both neighbours.

Somewhat unrelated but I also wanted to ask - in this questline you can find Blaine by persuading Katherine promising her "a favour". Does this actually do anything? Why is this an option? By the time you usually start this quest you pretty low in status in underrail to just go granting favours to random people. She is a merchant (who are usually shrewd and prosperous people) operating on a ganger turf and for all she knows you're just some drifter that running errands for SGS at best. Can you make this option to increase her prices a little or something or there is actually some weight to your promise that I simply don't know about?

It shouldn't be a lot of work, no, but there are other neat suggestions and ideas people have contributed and I'd like to implement it all in one go; makes things simpler. And it's also a matter of priorities, of course, as it is enticing and fun to polish and tweak stuff, but we've got Expeditions to release. :D

As for Katherine's favor, there's nothing more to it. It's just a simple persuasion check that offers nothing more than information about Blaine. That dialog was written a long time ago and there is a possibility something more was planned but got cut somewhere along the way. I'll take a look at it once I'm back to working on Junkyard.

No pressure, you guys are pretty great. It's cool that you stay in touch with the community and actually listen. And I know that you will do everything you want to in due time. Can't wait for the expedition, arrr!

Is it ok to ask one question though? I remember reading in the diary that core city will feature a merchant that specialises in watercrafts. Will there be a new location for him or is it that coughing dude from the base game?

It's going to be a new guy. We've made a new zone at the Core City docks (and it'll be accessible only with the expansion), and that's where you'll find his shop. :)

You could add similar options for other combat quests, such as the Free Drone quest "SRO Assault."
