Playing a burglar: is it possible?
« on: December 21, 2012, 06:10:43 pm »
Hello, Underrail players. I don't have the game, but I was wondering... Is it possible to play a sneaky character (like a burglar or a thief)?

I'm asking because I've tried it in Fallout 1 and 2. I failed epically in both games. So, is it possible to go with stealth instead of machine guns?

I've done a stealthy thief/sniper character that worked really well. I like to kill everything, so I didn't try just sneaking by. Stealth works exceptionally well in this game because you can tell if you're about to be spotted and react accordingly. I'd skip the pickpocket skill, though, since I was never once able to steal something without getting caught.

But is it possible to do the quests without having to kill dozens of squads? You see, I really enjoyed Morrowind because I didn't have to defeat the boss (and all his minions) just to get the key of a magically locked door. I could just sneak to the door past the minions (occasionally giving a headshot to the one who would seem the most troublesome to sneak past), lockpick it, take my item and finish the quest without having to face an incredibly overpowered dark sorcerer.

Can I do that in Underrail? Can I open quest doors with lockpicks, or am I doomed to always have to fight for my entrance? Also, in the quests that I really have to fight someone, can I hire mercenaries to fight for me?

You can for example:

Hack auto-turrets to kill enemies for You
Plant traps to do work for You
Use vent shafts to move freely in heavily guarded areas
Use persuasion/intimidation to achieve quest goals/ talk Your way out of tough situation
You  can sneak past most enemies

Did not found a way to hire mercs so far, dunno if it will be possible
Mitigating enemies wont alone give You exp tho...

I see. To level up is one of our biggest challenges. Well, thanks for the answer, it cleared things up for me.

You can finish most quests without killing stuff, I think.
I'm not sure on how much XP you'd miss out on there, I never went for a pacifist playthrough.

You'd still get some XP for lockpicking, hacking and detecting secrets. And of course, you'd get bunch from quest completion.

If you decide to give it a go, let me know how it went.

Cheers.

I believe there are few scripted encounters that can't be bypassed with stealth no matter how good you're at it but you can avoid combat with intimidate/persuation skills in most of them and one can be 'bypassed' by not taking certain quest. The biggest problem is experience as probably 75%+ of all xp comes from killing things so getting high enough skills (you gain skillpoints by levelling up, unlike in morrowind where you level skills by using them) to meet the requirements. Most loot is also random so you might find uberstealth coat (if you're super lucky) from first crate you open or you might not find any in entire game (if you're extra unlucky) as stores do not currently restock so you're stuck with that they have (again random). Also if you can't fight properly at late game (even what it currently is), anything there will kill you by just looking at you (there are ways to get around it currently by exploiting AI weaknesses and/or game mechanics if you are so inclined but you will have to be very carefull to not be spotted first).

In the eary levels, pacifist gameplay is fine, in later levels (namely the mutant area), you get a lot of experience for killing, so I can pretty much say that you missing out on at least 3, maybe 4 levels in the current state of the alpha if you skip killing stuff.

About random loot - it seemed to me that the best loot is generated when you come to the location for the first time.
Way I had gotten Preserved Human Brain.

Found it too. Does it have a use? It seems to be a quest item.

I don't think so. Not in this alfa.

Btw, how to get there?

I think You need high perception to see hidden bridge on the other side of the cavern (where the cave hoppers are getting stuck,  and 2 psi beetles are roaming). Didnt tried it yet but it looks like there should be a long stone bridge there

Well, I had such idea, but 15 Perception didn't help much.

There's no way to get there anymore. It's just something I forgot to remove from the area. :P
