Mapping Underrail with pixels
« on: June 29, 2016, 04:34:44 am »
Hey all,

I just wanted to share the current version of my Underrail map.

I am creating a map while I play through the game for navigation purposes, I was not satisfied with what was available on the internet so I figured I'd make my own. What I want is a top down map that makes it easy to navigate the world of Underrail. To accomplish this I use pixel art and I am manually drawing this map (basically pixel by pixel) to match every tile within Underrail one on one with a pixel on the map. This is a sh*t ton of work and I do wonder why I started this... and half the reason for posting this is to see if people would be interested in this to help me keep on going. ;D

NOTE 1: New players be aware this map will spoil exploration and hidden areas!!

NOTE 2: Download the package to download all the files!
The package also includes my original GraphicsGale (GAL) file and the 4x size images.

Update: July 11, 2016 - version 0.2.0
Lower Underrail and Lower Underrail caves have been updated.

Update: July 3, 2016 - version 0.1.1
The 2nd area is not finished yet but it's gonna be damn big so here's what I have now:

Package: (inclused eveything: white, dark, normal size, 4x size, original GraphicsGale file)

Thanks for the praises!
Did some more work today, I think I'll upload the new version when I finish the second area.

Awesome! Make sure you prepare some 4x versions or something like that once you're done.

I am impressed!

SuNo.
PS: for all new players : Sure a map would have helped me a lot finding my way rather than wandering. However, even though I was mad at not having a map when playing (as for many other choices in the game), retrospectively, it added some uncertainty and fun.

Thanks again for the replies!

I have updated the map to my current version.

Personally I just zoom in, but I can see that it would be convenient to have a bigger image.
When they are done I will add a larger version. :D

I do agree and my maps will spoil the feeling of exploring!
But I feel an auto-mapping system would be best. The game could map where you have been, so you don't get lost and know what you have already explored and jet nothing would get spoiled beforehand.
So yes, new players: use at your own risk!

Does anyone know a good site to put gif images to display them here on the forum without them adding another compression?

How about the underail wiki? ;) We already have a bunch of player-made maps. Let me know if you want an account so you can keep your images updated. Otherwise I can make and upload upscaled versions of them as you post them here.

...erm hell yeah? XD
I didn't see that coming, but yeah the wiki would be awesome :D
And yes I would appreciate an account so I can keep them up to date :)

I was wishing I had a map during the first hour of the game, but after that I just seemed to naturally memorize where everything was as I explored. I found that the lack of map didn't really have an appreciable effect on my ability to navigate.

That being said, it's actually pretty cool to see areas laid out like this, and I'm sure it'll be helpful to people who feel more comfortable having a map. Good job! :D
